I just had the G shipped to me and ive been on it for the past 5 hours just customizing and bringing it up to par with my MyTouch4g. one thing i noticed was that the apps running in the background, that little 'launcher" that has the recently used apps in there, is there a way of closing down apps completely and not having that? i find that closing those off really speeds up the system.

It sounds like your'e just looking for a simple task manager. Try "Advanced Task Killer" or "Taskiller Pro". Use either one and you can disable or end tasks and applications.

Re: Disabling Apps?
Yeah i thought about that, but from my experience on the Mytouch4g, using tasks killers just closes everything, including system files that need to be running on the device to keep it running smooth. when i used ATK on my MyTouch, i was getting FC's left and right, after i stopped and started using Watchdog (basically sees which apps are going crazy and specifically kills em) my phone hasnt FC'd on me in 3.5 weeks, and thats when i was averaging 4 FC's a day.
But yeah, i was wondering if theres a way to disable keeping the programs from running in the background.

you can disable unwanted apps using packagemanager via adb shell.
